Who is who in Boko Haram

Abubakar Shekau  He is the leader of  Boko Haram. He is said to be a fearless loner, a complex, paradoxical man - part intellectual, part gangster. Fondly called imam or leader by his followers, Abubakar Muhammad Shekau was born in Shekau village in Yobe State. Some say he is 34 or 35, others that he may be 43 - the uncertainty adds to the myths surrounding Nigeria’s most wanted man. Shekau was once thought to have been killed by security forces in 2009 - only for him to reappear in videos posted on the internet less than a year later as Boko Haram’s new leader. He has not been seen in public since. Instead, still images and video clips of him are released from time to time, mostly online, by the group’s faceless “public enlightenment department”. Nigeria by numbers

One fifth of Africans live in Nigeria. The country has the second largest economy on the continent with annual GDP of $71 Billion. Nigeria has a federal structure with 36 states. A multi-religious society, it has 250 ethnic groups speaking over 350 languages and dialects. The major languages are English, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. Nigeria is the 13th largest oil producer in the world with 32 billion barrels of oil reserves (sufficient for 37 years). The country’s gas reserves will last for 110 years at current rates of usage. Oil and gas income combined is worth about 50 cents per person a day. Of 135 million Nigerians, 75 million live in absolute poverty. Only India and China have larger numbers of poor people living within their borders. More than one in twenty (5.8%) of Nigerians lives with HIV/AIDS. There are 1 million AIDS orphans. ABSTRACT It is surprising seeing the country, Nigeria, which is bound with plenty mineral and human resources, to be living object poverty.
